The Prisoner Wine Company 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley ($60)

Spiced mulberry is soaked in cinnamon-plum cedar. Palate-coating tannins leave a trail of red licorice, sweet tobacco, and Luxardo cherries. Approachability is a key factor here, with a lingering, juicy finish.

The Prisoner Wine Company 2023 Unshackled Cabernet Sauvignon, California ($22)

This is not just a straight Cab but rather a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc. It is a bit firmer in texture than the 2023 Unshackled Red Blend, but not by a lot, with slightly darker-toned fruit recalling Bing cherries and dark berries. There’s lots of juicy deliciousness in this for just twenty-two bucks.

The Prisoner Wine Company 2023 Unshackled Red Blend, Central Coast ($22)

A ripe and juicy blend of Zinfandel, Malbec, Syrah, Petite, Sirah, Grenache, and Cabernet Sauvignon, this is soft without being unstructured, and is a rare example of a full-flavored red that can either be enjoyed as a sipping wine or enjoyed tableside with a very wide range of foods—nothing as robust as grilled steak required.

Tribute 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon, California ($18)

There are dark fruits of cherry and ripe strawberry with mocha undertones. This Cabernet Sauvignon has a Pandora’s box of cigar smoke, sandalwood and cassis with bramble fruit throughout. Grapes are sourced from Certifiably Sustainable vineyards predominantly in the Central Coast.

Trione 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon, Block 21, Alexander Valley ($80)

The excellence of the 2021 vintage for Cabernet in Napa and Sonoma is widely known, but additional evidence is welcome when it tastes this good. Fresh blackberry and Bing cherry fruit has already absorbed most of the oak in this wine, with baking spices and light toast still augmenting its immaculately balanced freshness and ripeness.

Trione 2024 Sauvignon Blanc, Russian River Valley ($30)

Hitting just the right balance between freshness and depth of flavor, this is very skillfully styled Sauvignon Blanc. Although it was made entirely in stainless steel tanks, the warm California sun imparted ripe aromas and flavors balanced between zesty citrus notes and warmer tones recalling tropical fruits along with a soft flavor akin to lemon curd.

Tuatea 2024 Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough, New Zealand ($8)

Thyme and gooseberry aromas fill the glass. Perky acidity wraps spiced pear and lemon curd. A clean, salty grapefruit zest leaves behind a zippy finish.

Turnbull 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley ($60)

A luxe estate release, flush with ripe boysenberry and mocha. Attuned to the exquisite texture, this red winds down a path of suede and silk. White pepper inches its way through black raspberry, cedar, and baking spices. Tannins are present with an upright spine and amped by vibrant acidity.
