Castell del Remei 2018 “1780,” Penelles, DO Costers del Segre, Catalonia, Spain ($50)

Penelles is a small village in the flatlands of Catalonia, and a sub-region on Costers del Segre, on Spain’s northwestern coast. The grapes for this blend of 18% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Tempranillo, and 7% Garnacha are planted over 1900 feet in elevation. Aged 18 months in French and American oak, a wash of creamy blackberry and vanilla connects with spiced oak and espresso. Super sleek and well structured. Minerality is clear-cut and adds to the texture of its vivacious character.

Cavus 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon, Stags Leap District, Napa Valley ($125)

Deep core, with some fade at the edge of the glass, and excellent aromatic intensity. Highly expressive, with dark fruit, mocha, vanilla, and star anise. Very well structured, finely balanced, showing some bottle age development, with refined, superb length and well-integrated oak (22 months in oak, 50% new French oak). Sublime extended back palate. A benchmark Stags Leap District example that develops beautifully with aeration. 2,364 bottles produced.

CHEV 2021 Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley, Sonoma County ($80)

Lifted notes of rose-kissed cinnamon, with undertones of soil and red beets. Black cherry is assigned to a savory mid-palate of balsamic and orange peel.

CHEV 2021 Pinot Noir, Santa Lucia Highlands, Monterey County ($80)

A heady tangle of sage, lavender, and boysenberry with umami and salted plum. Dynamic and intense notes of cigar leaf and licorice.

96

CHEV Pinot Noir, Sta. Rita Hills, Santa Barbara County ($80)

A deluxe array of spiced rose petals, cinnamon, sweet basil, and pomegranate. Feather-down mouthfeel exudes bright notes of candy cane and cherry pie with just enough of an earthy foundation to peek through. Hibiscus perfumes nose and palate.

Chocolate Bar Dessert Wine, Paso Robles ($16.95)

A port-like profile made from Paso Robles Syrah, Ruby, and Tawny California brandies. All-natural chocolate and cocoa are infused into the blend. With an abv of 18 percent, this well-balanced fortified wine speaks of chocolate-covered cherries. Additional notes of vanilla-almond and plum preserves are sleek, with a nuance of licorice

Cline 2021 Seven Ranchlands Cabernet Sauvignon, North Coast ($42)

With a nice grip and teeth-grabbing plum skin tannins, this Cab shows remarkable depth of flavor. Sandalwood, mocha, and black cherry unite in a formidable structure.

Cline 2022 Seven Ranchlands Chardonnay, Sonoma County ($37)

A fragrance of lemon blossom and pineapple is clean and vibrant. Fresh linen, white flowers, and lemon sorbet are delicately centered on a crisp, airy veil of powdered vanilla. Focused acidity and a purity of style make for a modern style Chardonnay.
