Spirit Reviews

92

Pelotón de la Muerte Tequila ($40)

A higher proof tequila with aromas of candied ginger and fresh agave. A zip of black pepper and some herbaceous notes play out with brown-sugared apples and earthy minerality. Finishes with a hint of tobacco and spearmint.

Praedictum 15-Year-Old Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, USA ($600)

Bill Foley’s prediction of owning the winningest expansion team in NHL history is commemorated by this 112-proof spirit, as his Vegas Golden Knights hockey franchise reached the Stanley Cup in their first year and his vision of “playoffs in three, and cup in six,” became a reality. This is a limited-edition whiskey produced from barrels that Foley himself had hand selected.
Flavors range from hazelnut to chocolate-covered cherries and sandalwood, draped in salted caramel. Barrel-proof and sensational, just a drop of water stimulates a bouquet of tart apples, orange peel, apricot, nutmeg, and a satin-textured wash of new leather. Certainly above average: Goal!

Cedar Ridge American Single Malt Whiskey, The Quintessential Signature Blend, 92 proof ($55)

A 100% malt barley aged in American oak and Solera processed for a single barrel aging system. The nose offers cedar closet and parchment with a waft of summer peach. A superbly pleasant entry of peach pie, nougat and cherrywood. A patchwork of heat dissipates, allowing complex flavors to soften and spread towards the lathered finish of orange tart and mile chocolate.

95

Cedar Ridge Small Batch Double Barrel Bourbon Whiskey, 105 proof ($60)

Despite the overproof, the flavors reach through dramatically. Dark chocolate, apricot, black cherries, marzipan are dynamic and intense. Rainwater minerality and orange zest linger on the warm, toasted biscuit finish.

95

El Mexicano Tequila Blanco 90 proof ($50)

Engaging aromas of lavender, plum blossom, and vanilla bean lead to a delicate, sensual mouthfeel. Lanolin, patchouli, and salted lemon wedge leave a luxurious, lingering coating on the tongue.

94

El Mexicano Tequila Blanco, 80 proof ($40)

It opens with a salty marine perfume surrounding vanilla and blueberry. Chocolate covered cherries, black pepper, and earthy clay revel with an unveiling of baked agave. Creamy, with lilac tones on the streamlined finish.

94

El Mexicano Tequila Reposado, 80 proof ($45)

Aromas of vanilla cream and buttercup are irresistible, but the textural beauty of this spirit is its finest trait. The liquid almost hovers over the tongue, except for the zing of white pepper and sandalwood that grounds it to its more earthbound profile. Notes of apricot, maple walnut, and parchment are memorable.

97

Ron Carúpano Añejo Reserva 18-Year-Old, Venezula

The lilting aromas of marzipan and peach lead to a gentle spirit, round and wafting with flavors of butterscotch, peanut brittle, peach nectar, and cedar closet. Luscious and rich, with a finish of orange peel and mocha latte. As stylish and elegant as one would imagine in an aged rum. Aged in American oak barrels; 80 proof.
