Stags’ Leap Winery 2024 “Vintner’s Select” Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley ($90)

Well-structured with plush tannins, this wine captures intensity and finesse. With small amounts of Malbec and Petite Sirah, the wine is silky, with a demeanor of impactful grace. Flavors of chocolate-cherry, cinnamon rhubarb, and lavender mint melt across the palate. With a fine acid structure, it demonstrates youthful vigor and freshness.

Sterling 2023 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley ($60)

Malbec, Merlot, Petite Sirah, and Cabernet Franc add depth, color, and ripeness to this 89% Cabernet Sauvignon. Wild blackberries surround clove and cigar leaf. Sandalwood sparked with white pepper and red tea is tempered with robust yet velvety tannins, contributing to the wine’s strong framework and inviting texture. Youthful and focused.

Subterra 2023 Pinot Noir, CA ($17)

Rose petals and tart red cherries are salted with toffee and allspice. Graceful and light-hearted with a touch of tilled soil on the finish.

Subterra 2024 Chardonnay, CA ($17)

Sweet basil and lemon verbena add flourish to this refreshing white. Golden apple and pineapple are lively and keeps the “perky” going through to the finish.

92

Subterra 2024 Sauvignon Blanc, CA ($17)

Floral aromas lead to a bloom of jasmine and lime blossom. The perfume persists on the palate, accentuating a spark of saline minerality on the crisp finish.

93

Three Sticks 2025 Casteñada Rosé, Sonoma Coast ($45)

Made by the saignée method from a field blend of Rhône varieties, this estate-grown rosé has got ample meat on its bones. Mint-flecked scents of wild strawberry, maraschino cherry, and cantaloupe spring from the glass before descending on the fairly full and ripe yet quite dry palate, where blood orange and rose petal yield to a peppy, peppery finish.

Arbol de Vida 2025 Cabernet Sauvignon, Mendoza, Argentina ($15)

This producer’s Malbec offers excellent value, and that’s also true of this Cabernet, which is even more complex. A bit leaner in profile, it offers blackberry and dark cherry fruit flavors accented by a pleasantly leafy aromatic note and structured by fine-grained tannins.

Arbol de Vida 2025 Malbec, Mendoza, Argentina ($15)

A robust wine that shows no notable influence from oak, but also shows no need for any, as the fruit flavors are more pure than usual in this Malbec, and there’s plenty of natural tannin for structure provided by the grapes’ skins and seeds. Dark color accurately indicates the wine’s meaty character and intense flavors recalling dark berries.
