Wine Reviews

90

Nielson 2021 Pinot Noir, Santa Barbara County ($16)

Aromatically expressive with scents of red and black cherries accented with spicy undertones and a note recalling tomato plant leaves that often results from some whole cluster fermentation. Stylishly light in color and weight, this still offers plenty of flavor, though thankfully without any excess oak, nor any sweetness that doesn’t seem to emanate from the fruit.

91

Old Soul 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon, Lodi ($15)

Ripe and rich, with black cherry and plum declaring alignment with espresso and charred oak. An old world earthiness ensues on the finish.

90

Old Soul 20222 Chardonnay, Lodi ($15)

A pungent, woodsy perfume envelops the senses: mango and buttered popcorn. A lather of lemon wafers, ripe pineapple, and toasted oak indicate the wine’s well-balanced character.

92

On Q 2020 Megandina Chardonnay, Carneros, Napa Valley ($50)

Pineapple, yellow apple, and green banana glow with a charming acidity and balanced toast. Bright and cheerful, with fresh hay and vanilla pudding finish.

95

Opolo 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, Willow Creek District, Paso Robles ($55)

A limited barrel selection from two estate vineyards on the cooler west side. Spending 16 months in (50% new) 36- month seasoned French oak, the wine is sultry and silky, ripe, and round. Intense notes of blackberry and dark chocolate wash over the palate. A creamy deluge of plum, fennel, and cigar leaf overlap its deep mineral base.

Pair Me Wines 2021 Optimist, “The Grass is Greener,” St. Chinian AOP, Languedoc-Roussillon, France ($20)

This earthy, 50/50 Grenache-Syrah blend has essence of animale, charcuterie, dried violets, and a tarry middle. Well-structured with velvet-lined tannins and striking acidity.

89

Pair Me Wines 2022 No Reservations, Melon de Bourgogne, Loire Valley, France ($23)

Tangy flow of Mandarin orange and marzipan, with dried yellow flowers on the finish. Mineral driven notes inspire high salinity and racy acidity.

90

PairMe 2022 Poultry Pinot Grigio, Delle Venezie D.O.C., Italy ($15)

Minerality reaches the top of the palate, with white flowers and Anjou pear. Crisp and lean, with a lemon sorbet finish.
