Gianni Gagliardo, 2020 Barolo Del Comune di La Morra, Piedmont, Italy ($105)

Alluring aromas of violets and roses as well as red berries, with the same red fruit suggestions repeating on the palate, along with multiple savory accents. Beautifully balanced acidity and tannin support the flavors through the finish without shutting it down prematurely.

Gianni Gagliardo, 2020 Barolo, Castelletto MGA, Piedmont, Italy ($180)

Expert tasters often note that world class wines are great across their entire lifespan, but that’s a lot to ask of a young Barolo in light of Nebbiolo’s abundant acidity and tannin. Yet, this wine is already singing even when just released, showing a true “bouquet” rather than a single floral note as well as open and delicious flavors recalling plums, red raspberries. and black cherries. The tannins are fine-grained, and the oak is already nicely integrated, with two decades of positive development seeming likely for its future.

Grand Napa Vineyards 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon, Oakville, Napa ($135)

A very strong Cabernet from an exceptional vintage, this offers expressive aromas and very deep flavors. Impressively balanced, it has already absorbed most of the 50% new French oak in which it was aged, with only subtle spice and toast notes showing alongside the core of dark berry fruit. Subtle accents of autumn leaves and graphite lend additional complexity.

94

Grand Napa Vineyards 2021 Chardonnay, Los Carneros, Napa ($75)

Scents of oak spice, light toast, and baked apples are very attractive, and the flavors deliver on the promise of the bouquet. Concentrated and very flavorful yet not heavy or sweet, the wine shows excellent proportionality with its components of fruit, acidity, and wood.

91

Grandeur Wines, 2022 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Monterey County ($23)

Made with organic grapes and aged for 14 months with American and French oak, this over-delivers for its price. Dark cherry and blackberry fruit notes predominate in both the bouquet and flavors, but subtle oak spice also help start this off and keep it interesting through the finish, which is firmed up with gentle grip from fine-grained tannins.

92

Grgich Hills 2019 Zinfandel, Napa Valley ($38)

Deep, dense core, with a slight fade at the edge of glass. wonderful, pure, lifted aromas. Raspberry, blackberry, cranberry, dark roast coffee and savory spice notes are expressive, while full and ripe on the palate. Fine length on the back palate, with well-integrated tannins. Drinking very well at the present time but has the structure to age for several more years.

93

Grgich Hills 2020 Zinfandel, Miljenko’s Old Vine, Calistoga ($125)

Deep, well extracted, abundant black fruit. Damson plum, dried rose petal notes are expressive, dense and weighty on the palate with an undertone of cracked pepper. Ample weight, but with refinement and subtlety. Finely balanced, layered, nuanced, the back palate is extended and while the tannins are evident, they are ripe and well-integrated into the wine. The wine develops beautifully well with an hour of aeration. Blended with 9% Petite Sirah.

Gundlach Bundschu 2022 Mountain Cuvée Red Blend, Sonoma Valley ($22)

Fine, dense core, and well extracted. Ripe, red and black fruit character. Savory, moderate intensity, some vanilla oak notes, with good weight on the palate. There’s not enough O’s in smooth to describe the finish which is extremely round, with a supple back palate. Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon based.
