Lopai Cellars 2019 Heliotrope, Willow Creek District, Paso Robles ($80)

Reined in intensity, marked by big boy tannins without an edge is the first impression of this blend of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Mourvedre, and 3% Cab Franc. Chalky minerality plays out well against a backdrop of dark chocolate lavender and blackberry spice. Ripeness is decisively expressed on the rich finish.

Lopai Cellars 2020 Syrah, La Montañita Vineyard, San Luis Obispo Coast, SLO County ($80)

Violets bloom in a structured frame of anise, blackberry jam, and white pepper. Multi-faceted layers of chocolate fudge, clove, dark roast coffee, and cinnamon reverberate on the lengthy stream of liquid pleasure.

Lopai Cellars 2021 Sémillon, Vogelsang Vineyard, Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara, Santa Ynez ($55)

As steely as it is on entry, it soon widens with vanilla bean and lemon verbena. Possessing this ample weight, it carries through, leveraged with chamomile, honeyed cashew, and grapefruit zest.

92

Loveblock 2021 Pinot Noir, Central Otago, New Zealand ($36)

A single vineyard expression from the family owned, organic Vineyard called Someone’s Darling. Cinnamon and mushroom convene with wild strawberry and cherry tobacco. Vibrant acidity sparks the liquid, lifting notes of dried violets, white pepper, and pomegranate. A touch of smoke on the finish.

Lubanzi 2024 Cinsault, Swartland, South African ($18)

South Africa has lots of Cinsault planted, and though this mostly Mediterranean blending grape doesn’t have a lofty worldwide reputation, its capacity for producing elegant varietal reds suddenly made it a darling among South Africans about a decade ago. This is a terrific example at a great price. Vibrant red fruit notes recalling cherries and raspberries are irresistible (go ahead and try), with wonderfully balanced acidity and light tannins. Terrific anytime but ideal with a light chill during summer.

Luminara 2022 Alcohol-Removed Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley ($20)

Fresh, juicy blackberries are sweet and tart. This is a lively sipper, with hints of licorice and cocoa. Tannins are present; soft and velvet lined.

Made by James 2021 Pinot Noir, California ($20)

Winemaker James Foster over-delivers here, crafting a rich and ripe Pinot Noir. Notes of black cherry basted in cappuccino are mesmerizing. Silky, and beaming with sweet earth and sandalwood, a touch of smoke enters on the juicy finish.

Made by James 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon, California ($20)

Bright red fruit, rich and ripe with sweet tobacco, Italian herbs, and a caress of roasted coffee. Spiced Bing cherry and purple plum follow through, amplified by a good acid structure.
