Korbel Brandy Reinvents a Classic

Korbel Brandy, California, 80-proof; SRP $12.99–$14.99.

Korbel California Brandy is redefining the category by unveiling upscale packaging for all of its signature California brandies. More than three years of extensive consumer research led to the testing of more than 20 packaging designs in key markets throughout the U.S. The new label on the custom-designed cognac-style bottle will depict the Sonoma County chateau of Korbel Champagne Cellars and prominently features the F. Korbel & Bros. “FKB” insignia that will become the brand’s recognizable mark.

To support the unveiling of Korbel’s new packaging in market, an array of point-of-sale materials have been designed, along with premium bar accessories and innovative cocktails for on-premise.

Taste —A Life in Wine by Anthony Terlato

Anthony Terlato—patriarch of Terlato Wines, one of the world’s finest wine portfolio suppliers—has penned a new autobiography reminiscent of a Billy Wilder film, both in its American realism and its vibrancy. Tony Terlato has lived the American dream, from working for his family liquor store to making just the right decisions in a growing business to establish a position of global leadership in wine sales and importing. If it sounds like a Horatio Alger story, the coincidence has not been overlooked: In 2006, Terlato received the Horatio Alger Award for overcoming adversity to achieve success.

While the goal of other importers and distributors was volume, Terlato’s interest remained in quality. At 29, he became President of Pacific Wines, dealing with wine world potentates such as Alexis Lichine and Robert Mondavi. Introducing Italian and French wines to America is just one of Terlato’s many accomplishments; in the end, he has helped change our choices and, ultimately, our taste.

Yin, Yang & the Coffee Bean

The ancient Chinese art of feng shui is used to improve one’s life, from adjusting home surroundings to balancing one’s inner energy. It is also a method for improving health: Harmony can now be achieved in our morning ritual of drinking coffee.

Feng Shui Coffee Infusion asks the question, “What if coffee could do more?”—more than just awaken us and help us keep the pace. Herbs and other natural ingredients, including a trademarked extract called Essentra, are added to organic coffee beans in six blends, named for the properties they help enhance. Our editorial team has reached Nirvana with such chi-flowing brews as “Clarity,”  “Immunity” and “Calm.” For more information, call 800-826-3865 or go to www.FengShuiCoffee.net.

Wine Goes to the Movies

Australian media giant Village Roadshow, Ltd., producer of such movies as The Matrix and the Oceans 11 series, melds fine film and fine dining with its new Gold Class Cinemas concept. Each cinema will feature eight full-sized auditoriums with super-wide digital screens and a maximum of 40 reclining leather armchairs from which patrons will enjoy gourmet cuisine from Executive Chef Keith Keogh.

The wine list is being compiled by Master Sommelier Damon Ornowski, who has worked for Rudd Winery and Dean & DeLuca and was also sommelier at Piñons in Aspen. “This is not a theater with a restaurant attached,” notes Ornowski; “it’s a first-class restaurant with a well-run wine list and spirits program, where you can see a film in a unique setting.” Much of Ornowski’s job is on-site training. “Anybody can put together a list,” says the Master Sommelier, “but getting staff to understand service is what makes the difference.”

The first Gold Class Cinema opened in October in South Barrington, Illinois, with the next slated for the Seattle suburb of Redmond, Washington. Village Roadshow plans to have 50 destinations across the U.S. by 2013.
