Olfactory Evaluation Seminar To Be Held at Niner Wine Estates

Niner Wine Estates, located in Paso Robles wine country, will offer a Level Two Olfactory Evaluation of Wine Seminar from March 26 through March 30, 2012 from 2-5 p.m. This seminar is intended for the industry professional who wishes to further their sensory evaluation knowledge, through olfactory analysis. The cost to attend is $725 per student.

Often referred to as the most challenging aspect of evaluating wine quality, olfactory analysis is also one of the most important and most revealing. This complex process of interpreting the aroma of a particular wine can be overwhelming for many industry professionals.

French perfumer and international wine consultant Alexandre Schmitt will lead students through this complex process as he or she explores and identifies many of the popular and favorable aromatic compounds found in wine, like those of plants, spices and fruits, and teach students how to properly identify common defects in wine, like the wet cardboard smell that is often perceived in a "corked" wine. With olfaction education, industry professionals will become more confident in evaluating and communicating wine quality.

Seminar Overview

Day 1: Review of Level 1: The Aromatic Universe

Day 2: Aromatic Compounds Responsible for Defects in Wine

Day 3: Aromas Produced by Barrel Ageing

Day 4: Variety-Specific Aromas

Day 5: Identifying Defects in Contaminated Wines

In addition to the five-day olfaction seminar, Alexandre Schmitt will also conduct a condensed, one-day class intended for the wine-lover who wishes to expand their wine knowledge.  This class will be held on March 31, 2012 from 2-5 p.m. and will be the first of its kind offered to the general public by Alexandre Schmitt in the United States. The cost to attend this class is $125 per student.

Alexandre Schmitt is an international icon in the world of olfaction education.  After spending a number of years in London and Paris creating perfumes for leading brands, Alexandre went on to teach perfumery at the Bordeaux Pharmacy University and now teaches olfaction to professionals at the Bordeaux Oenology University and to winemakers and industry professionals worldwide.
