The Balvenie 50 Year Old Wins Prestigious Award for Packaging Design at 2013 Clio Awards

The Balvenie has been awarded the Silver Medal for Packaging Design at the 54th Annual CLIO Awards. The Balvenie Fifty, an extremely rare single malt Scotch whisky was released in 2012 to commemorate 50 years of service from the distillery's Malt Master, David Stewart.

The CLIO Awards are the world's most recognized international awards competition for advertising, design, interactive and communications. CLIO maintains its original commitment to celebrate and reward creative excellence, while continuing to evolve with the industry to acknowledge the most current, breakthrough work.

"It has been a privilege and a pleasure for us to join forces with The Balvenie and craftsman Sam Chinnery to design and produce this remarkable pack that celebrates David Stewart's 50 years of dedication to his craft." said Creative Partner of Here Design, Mark Paton.

"We are thrilled to be recognized by the CLIO Awards and presented with this fantastic honor," said Andrew Weir, Senior Brand Manager, US for The Balvenie. "This one-of-a-kind pack truly embodies our commitment to craftsmanship while paying tribute to our Malt Master David Stewart's half-century of service."

David Stewart has dedicated his entire working life to the art of single malt, making him one of the most respected craftsmen in his field. At exactly 50 years to the day that David joined the Highland Distillery as an apprentice, his incredible devotion was recognized with the release of a rare cask of The Balvenie distilled in 1962. Just 88 bottles of The Balvenie Fifty were released for sale worldwide with a suggested retail price of $30,000.

Inspired by David Stewart's unerring dedication to craftsmanship, Here Design in London collaborated with Scottish craftsman Sam Chinnery to create a box that symbolizes David's 50 year endeavor by combining 49 layers of seven beautiful Scottish grown timbers, many of which were taken directly from The Balvenie Distillery site in addition to a single layer of brass. The closing layer of brass, which is engraved with the story of this single malt, echoes the fittings of the distillery's stills and spirit safes.

The whisky itself is presented in a hand-blown glass bottle, sealed with a stopper handcrafted by Sam Chinnery and discreetly labeled with the key dates of the whisky's production, an individual bottle number and David Stewart's signature. Underneath each bottle, a heavy brass plate lifts off to reveal a rolled certificate of authenticity. The simplicity of the structure belies months of craftsmanship and a keen consideration of the tiniest of details, which is a fitting tribute to David Stewart, one of the five rare crafts passionately maintained only at The Balvenie Distillery today along with growing its own barley, malting it in its own traditional malting floor, employing coopers to tend to every cask and a coppersmith to maintain the stills.

The Balvenie created three exceptional videos that capture the essence of the rare 50 Year Old as well as the life of craft that Malt Master David Stewart has led over the last half-century:
