|Arkenstone Vineyards today announced that it will open the just completed winery and by-appointment-only tasting room November 1. In 1988, Arkenstone proprietors Ron and Susan Krausz purchased 42 acres of undeveloped land on Howell Mountain. Committed to excellence from the start, the Krausz family took their time with the planning and development of the property and winery, literally building it stone by stone in a series of phases that spanned more than 20 years. The result is a true family owned and operated winery, with a visually stunning property built for both form and function.
Arkenstone Vineyards focuses on Bordeaux-style wines crafted from 100% Howell Mountain estate fruit from organically farmed vineyards. With an annual production of approximately 1,000 cases, their flagship Cabernet-based blend “Obsidian” leads the portfolio, with Sauvignon Blanc and a small amount of Syrah rounding out the lineup.
At Arkenstone Vineyards, no corner has been cut in the winemaking process, which is led by full-time Winemaker Sam Kaplan. Except for fruit processing, all winemaking takes place in the caves, where the natural temperature is cool year-round. The winery’s layout allows for careful treatment of the grapes and wine, as well as total control over temperature and humidity.
Whether they’re veterans of the Napa Valley or first-time visitors to the area, wine-lovers and design-junkies alike will want to seek out this new Howell Mountain property. Off the beaten path and unassuming even in its grandeur, Arkenstone Vineyards is the ideal winery for those seeking an insider experience. Tours and tastings are available by appointment only, Monday through Saturday 10am to 3pm. The cost starts at $30 per person, and more extensive tours and tastings can be arranged upon request.
The winery produces their flagship Cabernet-based blend “Obsidian” ($120) and a Graves-style Sauvignon Blanc ($48), as well as a small amount of Syrah. Access to the winery is by appointment only. Arkenstone Vineyards is located at 335 West Lane in Angwin, California. For further information, please visit
