Rhumbar Mixologist Kristen Schaefer Named Las Vegas's "Most Inspired Bartender"

Rhumbar's lead mixologist Kristen Schaefer was named Las Vegas's "Most Inspired Bartender" at Bombay Sapphire's regional competition on July 14.

Kristen Schaefer of Rhumbar.
Schaefer's cleverly-crafted cocktail, The Don Harlow, took first place at the competition, earning her a spot in the national "Bombay Sapphire Most Inspired Bartender 2010" competition, set to take place in Las Vegas Sunday, August 29 and 30.

Twenty-seven of Las Vegas's top bartending and mixology professionals competed for a chance to represent Las Vegas among the 50 national markets going head-to-head in the finals, but it was ultimately Schaefer's inspiration and technique that caused the unanimous decision by the judges to move her forward in the competition.

"Kristen's cocktail impressed us on numerous levels," said Xania Woodman, Nightlife and Beverage Editor for Vegas Seven and a judge for the competition. "Her personal take on a classic White Lady cocktail, 'The Don Harlow' showcases Bombay Sapphire beautifully, offers a charming presentation, and is simple and refined, employing just a few high-quality ingredients. And, of course, it is simply delicious."

"The Don Harlow" inspired by Schaefer's late uncle, Don Page, combines Bombay Sapphire gin with Earl Gray tea, fresh lemon juice and a bitter orange espuma, served in a teacup with a saucer and an orange-spice rock candy stick.

"This drink was named after my uncle Don who lived in Harlow, a small town in Essex, England," said Schaefer. "The combination of his love for tea and England's historical ties to gin inspired me to create the cocktail.  Even the teacup in which 'The Don Harlow' is served resembles historical elements from the Prohibition-period, when cocktails were served in a teacup to deter law enforcement."

If Schaefer goes on to win the competition, she will be awarded the title of "Most Inspired Bartender 2010" along with $7,500 cash and a cover story and feature in the December issue of GQ magazine. Revelers that want to get their hands on this award-winning cocktail, which was recently featured in the August 12 issue of Vegas Seven, can do so at Rhumbar's stylish cocktail lounge at The Mirage.
